HNL CELEBRATES WORLD OCEAN DAY BY PLANTING CORALS IN JAKARTA
In celebration of World Ocean Day, Harapan Nusantara Lestari (HNL), the Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), and Balai Taman Nasional Kepulauan Seribu teamed up to plant corals on Kotok Island. This effort shows our commitment to protecting our ocean environments.
On June 8, 2024, volunteers and marine biologists gathered around Kotok Island to place 50 coral spider modules into the water. These structures help corals grow by giving them a stable place to attach and thrive.
The modules were planted with three types of corals: Acropora sp, Pocillopora sp, and Stylophora sp. Acropora sp provides habitat for many marine creatures with its branching structure. Pocillopora sp is hardy and resilient, while Stylophora sp adds vibrant colors and intricate forms to the reef.
The goal of this initiative is to restore the coral reefs around Jakarta’s Thousand Islands , which are vital to the marine life in Jakarta. Coral reefs offer shelter, food, and breeding grounds for countless species. HNL, JAAN and Balai Taman Nasional Kepulauan Seribu will monitor the growth of the planted corals to ensure their health and sustainability.
