BUMINUSA-CHINA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Buminusa – China  Scholarship is a prestigious initiative by Bumi Nusantara Group (BNG), in collaboration with Harbin Engineering University (HEU), to empower talented Indonesian students with an opportunity to pursue a master degree at one of China’s leading engineering institutions.

This scholarship aims to:

  • Build academic and cultural ties between Indonesia and China.
  • Foster expertise that will contribute to Indonesia’s development within the global economy.

Bumi Nusantara Group (BNG) has committed USD 100,000 per year for three years, making a total of USD 300,000 to fund this scholarship program. A Grant Agreement was signed between Harbin Engineering University and Bumi Nusantara Group (BNG) in 2024, formalizing this partnership and ensuring the successful implementation and sustainability of the scholarship program.

Buminusa-China scholarship is offered in partnership with Harbin Engineering University (HEU), a prestigious institution founded in 1953 and located in Harbin, China. HEU is a leading university in STEM fields, particularly known for its top-ranked programs in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Nuclear Science, and Control Engineering.

The scholarship is designed to:

  • Empower Indonesian Talent: the program seeks to increase the number of highly qualified professionals in Indonesia by providing financial support to students pursuing master’s degrees in science, technology, and innovation.
  • Encourage International Collaboration:  the scholarship aims to build strong academic and professional networks between Indonesia and China, fostering long-term collaboration in research, technology, and industry.
  • Cultivate Future Leaders: the scholarship is focused on developing future leaders in Indonesia’s business and technology sectors, ensuring they possess both global perspectives and advanced technical skills.
  • Support National Development: Prepare scholars to address key STEM challenges that are critical to Indonesia’s progress. By enhancing the nation’s competitiveness in the global economy, this objective supports the broader goal of national development.

The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, covering all essential costs including full tuition, on-campus accommodation, living expenses, transportation, visa fees, and medical insurance for three years/cycle. With a total annual budget of $100,000, scholars can focus entirely on their academic and research pursuits without financial worries, ensuring a worry-free and enriching experience during their three-year program at Harbin Engineering University.

a) Full Tuition Fee

b) The scholarship will fully cover the tuition fees of ¥33,000 per year for the three-year master’s program at Harbin Engineering University.

c) Accommodation

The scholarship covers the on-campus accommodation valued at ¥500 per month which can cover for a double bedroom.

d) Living Allowance

In addition to accommodation, scholars will receive a monthly living allowance of ¥2,500. This allowance is designed to cover daily expenses, such as meals, transportation, and personal necessities.

e) Transportation and Visa

The scholarship includes coverage for transportation and visa costs, which will be reimbursed at cost.

f) Residence Permit

The scholarship covers the annual residence permit fee of ¥800, totaling ¥2,400 over the three years of the program.

g) Comprehensive Medical Insurance

Comprehensive medical insurance is provided, covering ¥800 per year.

  • Applications Open: November 1
  • Application Deadline: February 15
  • Initial Screening: March 1 to May 1
  • Interviews: 2-3 weeks post-screening
  • Final Selection: June 1-15
  • Announcement of Results: End of June
  • Orientation: First week of the new semester (September)

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Indonesian citizenship
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Proficiency in English (IELTS score of ≥ 5.5, TOEFL score of ≥ 79, or other proof of equivalent language proficiency) for programs taught in English.
  • Proficiency in Chinese (HSK level 4) for programs taught in Chinese.
  • Applicants must be in good health and possess a clean criminal record.
  • Candidates must be under the age of 35 at the time of application.
  • Applicants should demonstrate strong character, integrity, and a solid academic record.

To apply, candidates should:

  1. Complete the HEU online application on the official Harbin Engineering University portal here.
  2. Prepare and submit the following documents:
    • Passport (first page)
    • Academic transcripts and degree certificate
    • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent)
    • Two reference letters
    • Study plan outlining research interests and career goals
    • Physical examination form
    • Non-criminal record certificate

All documents must be submitted by February 15.

2. Who is eligible for the scholarship?

Indonesian students with a relevant bachelor’s degree, at least two years of work experience, and proficiency in English (or Chinese for Chinese-taught programs) are eligible to apply.

3. Which programs are eligible for the scholarship?

All master’s programs at HEU are eligible for the scholarship, including both English-taught and Chinese-taught programs.

4. How many scholarships are offered each year?

Three scholarships are awarded annually based on the selection process.

5. Are there other scholarships available if I am not selected?

6. Do I need to speak Chinese to apply for the scholarship?

For English-taught programs, Chinese proficiency is not required. However, basic Chinese skills can be advantageous. For Chinese-taught programs, Chinese language proficiency is necessary.

7. If I enroll in an English-taught program, am I expected to learn Chinese during my studies?

Yes. Chinese language lessons are part of the curriculum. Scholarship recipients are expected to achieve a certain level of Chinese language and cultural proficiency in addition to excelling in their academic program.

8. Are there additional benefits beyond scholarship coverage?

Yes, scholars may have opportunities to intern with Bumi Nusantara Group (BNG) during their studies and may be considered for employment with BNG after graduation.

9. Are there any post-graduation commitments?

Scholars are encouraged to return to Indonesia upon completing their studies and are expected to contribute their expertise to Bumi Nusantara Group’s projects when required.

10. What happens if I fail to complete my studies within three years?

The scholarship covers a maximum of three years. Any extension beyond this period will need to be self-funded by the student.
